From Tuesday, October 1 to Friday, October 11, 2024, Poe Baltimore invites you to join them for a cemetery tour and exhibit that will transport you through pivotal moments in American history, showcasing the famed writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe and the Poe family’s profound contributions to the founding of the nation.
Visit Edgar Allan Poe’s grave and monument, and experience “Poe, Revolution & Lafayette”, a life-sized diorama and historical exhibit, plus panels and discussions. A mobile app will be included for the cemetery tour.
These two events take place in conjunction with the International Edgar Allan Poe Festival & Awards – a family-friendly event celebrating Poe’s life, works and influence in the arts – at various venues around Baltimore, as well as an outdoor fair at Poe House featuring Poe-themed performances, art, vendors and food.

About the cemetery tour
History performers will guide you, via mobile app, on a tour of the famed Burying Ground at Westminster Hall, the final resting place of Edgar Allan Poe. Visit the grave and monument where Poe was buried no fewer than three times; and those of the Poe family, who repose alongside other Revolutionary War and War of 1812 heroes, and other great figures in the rich tapestry of Baltimore’s past. Engage with new interpretive signage and virtual resources, deepening your understanding of the Poe family’s Revolutionary War patriotism and legacy.
About the exhibit
Long before Edgar Allan Poe was born, the Poe family was noted in Baltimore for their service in the Revolution and the War of 1812. Learn about the Poe family’s contribution and how their service made possible their famous grandson’s literary career. Discover the remarkable connection between Edgar Allan Poe and the great Marquis de Lafayette* as Poe Baltimore celebrates the Bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour in 1824.

* Known in the United States as “Lafayette”, Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette, Marquis de La Fayette, was a French nobleman and military officer who volunteered to serve under General George Washington in the American Revolutionary War. He also worked with Thomas Jefferson to write the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, paving the way for a constitution for the French Republic and the onset of French Revolution.
