Painter’s Survival Guide: All About Oil Painting

Explore oil painting in a two-day workshop

Learn all about oil painting materials and their practical chemistry during this two-day workshop with Emily Joyce on Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22, 2024 at ARTiculations Art Supply. Students will be provided with the knowledge they need to take full advantage of oil painting material properties, increase their artist material literacy, and understand how to improve their studio practice to better care for their paintings. This is an intermediate-level adult class, with only eight spots available.

Participants will explore different parts of the layered structure of the traditional oil painting – canvas, gesso, drying oils, varnish and various contemporary painting mediums – and discuss their function, chemistry and how to correctly use each when painting. The workshop will also include discussions on how to improve the handling and storage of paintings, and how to make studio practice safer and more eco-friendly.

Students will have the chance to stretch and prime their own canvas, and experiment with the materials and processes covered during the workshop. See details on materials for students to bring and materials that will be supplied here.

About Emily Joyce

Emily Joyce is an artist and paintings conservator based in Toronto. She is a graduate of the Master of Art Conservation program at Queen’s University, specializing in the treatment of oil and acrylic easel paintings. For her Bachelor of Fine Arts thesis, also at Queen’s, she specialized in oil painting, studying the techniques and materials of Master painters such as Caravaggio, Bosch and Rembrandt. In 2018, she completed a certificate in Traditional Materials, Methods of Painting and Restoration techniques through San Gemini Preservation Studies in Italy, where she learned about the science of art materials. Through her studies, she has come to better understand the functions of art materials and how to change her painting processes to increase the longevity of her work, inspiring her to develop this course for fellow painters.
