Ever wonder what a North Korean martial arts movie would be like? Join Killer B Cinema to find out! The story about how this film got made is just as, if not even more, interesting.
About Hong Kil Dong
Hong Kil Dong is a 1986 North Korean historical drama directed by Kim Kil In. The film is based on Hong Gildong jeon, an anonymous Korean novel about a Robin Hood-like bandit.1 It was written by an award-winning South Korean filmmaker who was kidnapped by North Korea in 1978. He wrote the film during his captivity, eventually escaping – and North Korea later decided to produce it.
Set in Joseon-era Korea – a 500-year-old dynastic kingdom and the last of its kind – Hong Kil Dong is born in Hanseong (modern-day Seoul), the illegitimate son of a nobleman. When his stepmother hires bandits to kill him, the plot is thwarted by a monk who comes to his rescue. A practitioner of magic and martial arts, the monk goes on to train Hong, who then goes on to defend the local villagers and fight off an invasion by Japanese ninjas.
