Film Screening: Les Filles Du Roi

For one night only, on Thursday, September 19, 2024: Join the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre for a special screening of Les Filles du Roi (2023), a Canadian musical drama directed by Corey Payette, produced by Urban Ink. Experience this powerful story of friendship, resilience and cultural exchange, brought to the big screen with a stunning musical score.

A unique feminist & Indigenous perspective on the colonization of Canada

Set in 1665 Quebec, Les Filles du Roi follows Marie-Jeanne Lespérance (Julie McIsaac), a French fille du roy,* as she forms bonds with Mohawk fur traders Kateri (Kaitlyn Yott) and her brother Jean-Baptiste (Raes Calvert). Adapted from the 2018 musical by Payette and McIsaac, the film features dialogue and songs in English, French and Mohawk.

*Translated to “the King’s daughters”, this term refers to the roughly 800 French women sent to what is now Quebec, to bring succor and support to French settlers, as part of a program sponsored by King Louis XIV of France.
