‘1994: LAST THING RE/MEMBER’D STILL’

See this exhibition before it closes on Sunday, July 10, 2022!

This exhibition is happening at The RUN Gallery, a gallery showroom which opened in 2020 in Toronto’s west end (RUN stands for “Radically Underestimated Narratives”). It is owned by curator James Hewitt, who focuses the gallery’s exhibitions on contemporary mid-career artists. This is not Elliott’s first time at the RUN Gallery, Elliott was also their first artist-in-residence and the artist featured in the gallery’s inaugural exhibition.

Elicser Elliott is a Canadian visual artist known for his murals and street art, whose work was exhibited at the AGO and the ROM. If you are in Toronto, you may have come across the murals depicting commuters inside Runnymede subway station: these were created by Elliott as part of the TTC’s Public Art Program. Elliott was born in Montreal, but spent several years growing up on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent.

His new paintings and sculptures are on display at The RUN Gallery for another ten days. These new pieces touch on the subjects of memory and home and feature iconic Caribbean ephemera. Many of the works are acrylic on canvas or acrylic on wood panel, and some are still available for sale. Go check them out yourself before the show closes on July 10.

In his new series of work Elicser Eliott explores what are the narratives that lead/guide a diasporic Caribbean's memory of home? How does one re/member themselves an i'land, a water and the colours in and behind a "blue"? These canvases are a collection of questions the artist invites the viewer to find their own answer through. Here, he sorts through the illusory quality of his own memories, the muddled and the vivid, to depict what he knows to be real while challenging the colloquial nature of the images. Can we, in having spent more time away from "home" than within it, recall it accurately? Can one be trusted to remember "the home that was" through the mind's eye of the "home that is"? - Afrakaren
