Penrose Press

Penrose Press is about so much more than producing beautiful printed images, it’s about comfort – creating things that make people feel better about living in and navigating the world. It’s about art that feeds empathy.

Collaborating with poets and authors – and even a weaver – to publish books, produce gorgeous art prints and create touching greeting cards, artist Brianna Tosswill uses her book art practice Penrose Press to present storytelling in beautiful, physical detail, and to amplify marginalized voices and perspectives.

Many of the linocut art prints feature readers, set in a variety of scenes, either alone or with others. Collaborations with artists include poetry printed on hand-made paper or fine art combined with storytelling in book form. And Penrose Press’ greeting cards feature unique, heartfelt messages of support and encouragement – all printed on fine paper.

What we love about Penrose Press

We love the vintage-style imagery and thoughtful illustration. There’s also a soothing, even dream-like, quality to the work that evokes feelings of nostalgia and romance. We can easily insert ourselves into these scenes – especially those of the readers – and become inspired to dream up our own ideal reading spaces. And we can imagine the texture and feel of the fine paper the greeting cards are printed on.

This is art with a message: it’s okay to want and seek comfort and engage in self-care. In fact, it’s crucial during these often trying and confusing times. Viewing Penrose Press’ work encourages you to take some time away from your busy life to pause and reflect and engage in self-care, as well as care for others and the planet. Read a book or a poem. Relax in a bubble bath, perhaps with a candle. Or just do nothing. Select a thoughtful card and write a note to a loved one, to say what you’ve been meaning to say for a long time. (Written by C.M.)
