Librairie Drawn & Quarterly

Librairie Drawn & Quarterly is an independent Montreal neighbourhood bookshop and literary hub operated by publisher Drawn + Quarterly (D+Q). They specialize in, but are not limited to, English books and graphic novels – they also carry books by poets and local authors.

Starting off as comic book company, D+Q published a semi-annual comic book anthology. From there, it expanded into publishing comic book series, including iconic titles like Julie Doucet’s Dirty Plotte, Chester Brown’s Yummy Fur and Seth’s Palookaville. Their high-quality production, editorial integrity and commitment to artistic autonomy earned praise in Time Magazine as “the most elegant comics publisher in North America.”

Feeling the need for a neighbourhood bookstore in Montreal, they established Librairie Drawn & Quarterly as the flagship bookstore for D+Q in 2007. It hosts book launches and book clubs after hours – becoming a local literary hub for all ages of readers and genres of books.

What we like about this bookshop

We admire how Librairie Drawn & Quarterly has grown over thirty years from a single-issue magazine to an internationally renowned publisher of the world’s best cartoonists. A big fan of indie bookstores, we love that their bookshop is located in the very same neighbourhood where the company was founded in 1989, Montreal’s Mile End.

We appreciate the neighbourhood vibe of their shop and that they stock books in a variety of genres that appeal to readers of all ages. Their titles include new release fiction, along with their famous selection of graphic novels. They also have a cool collection of notebooks, including some featuring Studio Ghibli characters! And, of course, like all great indie bookshops, they feature staff favourites, as well as collections of award winners, and books by Black and female authors, as well as 2LGBTQ+ titles.
