Gallery 44 (G44) is an artist-run community hub for contemporary photography with a membership of 500+ local and international artists. They provide resources and support for artists and the public. Their programming includes exhibitions, events, workshops and mentorship. They also host an annual artist-run exhibition, based on a theme and featuring works produced by their members over the previous year.
Part of a larger network of artist-run centres that expanded across Canada in the 1960s and ’70s, Gallery 44 was founded in Toronto in 1979 by a small group of artists who came together to share a darkroom and studio. Originally located on Niagara Street, they moved to Bathurst Street in 1986 and started offering photography workshops. Moving to their current home at 401 Richmond Street West allowed them to expand their membership, public programming and facilities even further.
The movement was initiated by and for artists to counter dominant institutions and create communities supporting artistic production, presentation, education, and idea-exchange.

Supporting artists at all stages of their careers, G44 creates a space for photographers to explore/research, produce and exhibit their work, as well as to share ideas and connect with the community. G44 prioritizes equitable access to the arts; and works to remove barriers for artists, audiences, youth and adult learners – through educational partnerships with the Toronto District School Board and various community organizations.

What we like about this (analog) photography resource
We love that Gallery 44 is run by artists, for artists. And, not just for artists, they engage with the community through exhibitions and workshops – and even photography equipment garage sales – as they seek to make art accessible to everyone.
We also appreciate that they host an annual artist-run exhibition of works created by members. This is a great way to get to know some of G44’s artists and their work. (Written by C.M.)
Accessibility information: G44 is a small organization that occupies two suites in a large heritage building with some external access restrictions. They will seek to reasonably address physical accessibility issues within their two suites, where possible and as they arise. The 401 Richmond building has a narrow ramp at its Spadina entrance and street-level access at the west entrance near the Spacing Store. G44 welcomes all visitors, users, employees and members to use any personal assistive devices while on their premises. They welcome onto their premises service animals and support persons.
